Spielberg, 19 July – Rudy van Buren has started this belated racing season on a high, finishing on the podium following an exciting weekend at the Red Bull Ring in the Porsche Sports Cup.
The 28-year-old Dutchman entered his first race of 2020 driving the Porsche 991 GT3 Cup run by CarTech Motorsport. Although Rudy is mostly focussed on his efforts in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, which will commence later this year, he couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to participate in two Porsche Sports Cup Endurance races on the Red Bull Ring alongside gentleman driver Hugo Nuss.
“It was what you could call a bit of a cold start”, says Rudy. “I had to get adjusted to the car, which was equipped with ABS and set up towards Hugo’s preferences. I could get a lap or ten in during practice, though in qualifying I was trailing the leader by just a tenth of a second. We were eyeing a nice addition to our trophy cabinet providing everything would fall into place.”
The first fifty minute race was off to a bad start for Hugo after some contact, resulting in a spin into the gravel. As the car balance was disturbed, the duo had to deal with excessive oversteer and got stuck behind another car, which resulted in a seventeenth place. Expectations of the second race around the Austrian Grand Prix circuit were a lot higher.
As the starting lights went out again, Hugo had a promising getaway, though a spin relegated them to sixteenth. Rudy took over the wheel and set about overtaking a large number of cars within merely half an hour. Ultimately, theirs was the second 911 GT3 Cup to take the checkered flag, out of 21 cars.
With his first trophy for 2020 in the bag, Rudy looks back pleased: “This weekend didn’t commence in the best possible way, yet we did end up spraying champagne on the podium! Most importantly: I got to rack up lot of racing mileage, which is very valuable to progress over the long term.”
Next up will be the second Porsche Sports Cup racing weekend around Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, on 7-9 August. This and more will set Rudy up for the belated start to the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland season, which commences in September on the world-famous Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans.
