Oschersleben, 9 August – A heated racing weekend on Motorsport Arena Oschersleben resulted in Rudy van Buren’s first win of 2020, as the 28 year old Dutchman had his second outing in the popular Porsche Sports Cup.
For the second time this season, Rudy raced at the wheel of CarTech Motorsport’s Porsche 911 GT3 Cup in the Porsche Sports Cup Endurance. Following their success during the opening weekend on the Red Bull Ring, as Rudy and gentleman driver Hugo Nuss managed to finish on the podium, they were aiming to once again bring home some trophies.
“I had two roles this weekend”, said Rudy, acting as both race car driver and driver’s coach. Hugo got up to speed quickly, and we managed to beat his lap time from last year with over a second, despite the intense heat.
In qualifying, Rudy managed the second-best time on the 2.3-mile track: “My best lap was interrupted by a red flag, otherwise it would have very close indeed. We also saved my additional set of tyres for the races, gaining us 19 miles of fresher rubber for later – which would come in handy on a hot track.”
On Sunday afternoon, Hugo was off to a good start in the first fifty-minute race. Rudy: “I wasn’t sure how the race woulde evolve, but it really went our way. We controlled the race from start to finish. As I took over the wheel after twenty minutes, I had two cars to overtake and was able to pull out a big lead! It just went perfect.” Their 911 GT3 Cup finished the race first in class and second overall.
As temperatures rose to 35 degrees Celcius, the second race ended up in a different kind of heated battle. When Rudy took over the wheel, the oil and water temperature were already close to critical levels. Deciding not to push, Rudy carefully lifted and coasted, short shifted and managed his car to another third place in class. “That cost us around 2.5 seconds a lap, but we were just consolidating our final position following the first race result.” P1 and P3 in these Porsche Sport Cup Endurance races netted Rudy and Hugo the overall class win, to their great delight.
